The scent of oil is rising from my hair;
The prophet’s words hurl flames upon my mind.
Beneath the gaze of God, king’s crown I bear.
–
Before the prophet’s eyes my soul is bare;
He sees a call to shepherd humankind.
The scent of oil is rising from my hair.
–
My voice is soft, my youthful face is fair –
What royalty is there for one to find?
Beneath the gaze of God, king’s crown I bear.
–
Smoke from the altar stains the breathless air:
A fire to sear these eyes that once were blind.
The scent of oil is rising from my hair.
–
Of my heart’s strength I am still unaware;
It is a strength the Lord may still remind.
Beneath the gaze of God, king’s crown I bear.
–
Anointed son of Jesse, I now swear
To Adonai’s law my life forever bind.
The scent of oil is rising from my hair.
Beneath the gaze of God, king’s crown I bear.
I have always found the young David an attractive figure, being called from his flocks to be King of Israel because the Lord does not judge appearences but the heart. You have done a great job bringing his emotions on that fateful day to life! Particularly like the line: “The prophet’s words hurl flames upon my mind.”
I think one of the most human film portrayals of King David is by Gregory Peck in “David and Bathsheba.” It’s a little-known Biblical flick that really delves into the concepts of sin, redemption, doubt, faith, and rediscovering innocence in the memory of one’s childhood. Of course, there is some creative licence, but it’s a pretty good movie overall, I think. Have you ever seen it?
