A Lady of Light
A Woman of Water
A Sister of the Stars
A Daughter of the Dawn.
–
With sun woven in her hair
Spills light
Into even the darkest of nights.
–
With eyes clear as the sea
Filled with laughter
Sadness
Gentleness
Desire.
–
She is moon among stars,
Dove among birds,
Gentle as a lamb;
Fierce as a lion.
–
Her beauty surpasses even that of moon;
An ethereal simplicity surrounds her
Like an aura of sweet perfume.
–
Lady of the Wood
Star of the Sea
Moonlight in Elven Form;
Simple as a Flower
Terrible as the Dawn
Queen of Lothlorien.
In one of his letters, Tolkien indicated that he based Galadriel on the Catholic perception of Virgin Mary – majestic and worshipful. A far cry from the “demonic” moments we see in Peter Jackson’s movies.
That’s true. However Galadriel also is said to hold power which is beautiful and terrible to behold. I liked the portrayal of Galadriel in the movies.
Nice poem.
I love the descriptive comparisons you used in this poem, demonstrating the Elven Queen’s paradoxical traits, such as “Gentle as a lamb/Fierce as a lion” and “Simple as a flower/Terrible as the dawn”. It really brings to mind the correlation between Galadriel and the Blessed Virgin Mary in a very striking way. You do full justice to Tolkien’s Catholic inspiration
