Journey of Discovery Chapter 17 (A Kingdom Hearts Story)

We followed Hina and Scrooge through the trees to a beach where we could see someone surrounded by some of the strangest Heartless we had seen. They appeared to be wearing grass skirts while twirling torches around masked heads. Wait. The masks were their heads, and carried the heart-shaped insignia I had seen some Heartless carry. The more they spun the flames they were using as weapons the larger they got. Without waiting, the old duck ran forward and began to whack them with his cane.

Summoning my Keyblade, my cousin and I ran forward to assist the old quack before the Heartless could get him. Blocking one of the torches from those things, I tried to force it back before it could strike again, but then something happened. The flames got bigger, and streamed out like an old-fashioned flamethrower. Crying out in pain, I broke off from my attack and I expected that to be the end of me. How else was this going to end except with me as a pile of ashes?

However, a white light engulfed me, and the damage I felt from the attack on that Heartless seemed to vanish. Looking around, I saw light from the moon surrounding me and I saw all traces of burns disappear from my body. Wait. Moonlight? But that would mean… looking, I saw Hina seemed to be glowing as the light seemed to follow her direction. “Told you I was the goddess of the moon,” She smirked. “Do not worry about damage in this fight. I will heal you.”

Ducking from one of the Terror Torches, not sure why that was their name because it was ridiculous, Clair moved back from their attack. Why didn’t she fight… wait. Torches. They must gain power from heat, which means her fire magic won’t work against them. She would be in trouble, if that was the only spell she knew. “Deep freeze!” She cast the Blizzard spell, hitting one of the Heartless in the face, or mask, or whatever.

That spell did the trick because it recoiled in fear and allowed me an opportunity to move in. With some jabs and a slash, I ended up destroying it before it could do anything else only to be attacked by its companion. With a gasp, I turned and swung my Keyblade at it, but only managed to cut one of the torches in half. Brandishing his cane, Scrooge ran and tripped the Heartless while Clair froze it with her Blizzard spell. Before any of us could make a move a wooden oar slammed down onto the Terror Torch and finished it off.

It took a moment to realize the person we were trying to rescue was joining us in the fight. She fearlessly ducked and weaved in between the torches of the Heartless and got whacks in when she could. I had to admit it was great that she was helping, but I had to swing my Keyblade to keep one of the Terror Torches from incinerating her. “Plasma Bolt!” Throwing the spell at one of the remaining Heartless Clair managed to knock it off its feet while Scrooge used his cane to get the torch away from it. I prepared to finish it off, but then the oar appeared in its chest like it had been thrown like a spear.

As the crystal heart flew up, we turned to help the person finish off the last of the Terror Torches when we got a good look at her. I don’t know if it was the light of the moon or the torches, but she was incredible. With curly black hair flying around her head, she didn’t seem to let that stop her from going on the offensive, and she was not even dressed for combat. Just a red top wrapped around her with what appeared to be one skirt over a grass one like what the Heartless had.

The Heartless raised its weapon up to blow fire at her, but Clair leaped into action first by casting the Blizzard spell at it. As the torch was extinguished, Scrooge ran forward and knocked the weapons out of its hands with his cane. “Jason, now’s your chance, lad!” He told me as he leaped back from the claws of the Terror Torch.

“Don’t tell me what to do,” I growled, but I was going to do it anyway. Running forward to the Heartless, I passed the person who was helping us as she went to get her oar. With a couple of slices and a jab into its mask, the monster vanished into wisps of darkness as the crystal heart flew up into the sky. Unfortunately, we weren’t done yet as another wave of those things appeared on the beach.

This time there were two Terror Torches along with three Soldiers and five Shadows. “Oh, come on.” Clair groaned as we prepared to fight again. As I jabbed the first Shadow it melted into the ground while its friends leaped up and scratched me with its claws. Grunting from the pain, I was then attacked by one of the Soldiers as it spun around in the air and kicked me in the back.

My cousin wasn’t fortunate enough to escape either as she was hit by the fire attacks of the Terror Torches followed by a Soldier kicking her. However, both of us were engulfed by Hina’s moonlight as our injuries were healed. Getting back up, Clair narrowed her eyes at one of the Terror Torches. “Deep Freeze!” She threw another Blizzard spell their way as one of the torches got extinguished. She quickly threw another spell at it so its other weapon lost its flames as well.

“En garde!” Scrooge cried out as he jabbed his cane into the face of the Heartless Clair was attacking, and parried some of its blows with a smile on his face. It clawed at him again and again, but it was like the old duck knew his opponents’ moves before they did. He continued to whack it with his cane until he got a blow in that destroyed it and freed the heart.

I managed to catch one of the Shadows off-guard and with a few quick strikes I destroyed it and sent it back to the darkness. As I attacked another I noticed it seemed easier to destroy these Heartless now than it had been not long ago. The Soldiers, however, still took some work to get rid of as the other attacked me with its spinning kicks. “Fire!” Clair’s spell came from behind it doing some damage while I jabbed and sliced it until the crystal heart flew up.

The other two Shadows were heading towards the girl we were trying to help, but she had recovered her oar and met their challenge. Swinging her weapon around she managed to send the two Heartless flying backward while I moved in and finished one. As it vanished back into the darkness the two of us ran our weapons into the last, destroying it for good and leaving only one Shadow left.

Deep Freeze!” My cousin threw her spell at the last Terror Torch before the Soldiers did a double attack on her. As she fell backward from the combined kicking and clawing the old duck knocked one back towards the two of us. The girl moved in and hit the Heartless on the head a couple of times with her oar before a final jab sent the Heart flying up.

As Clair got to her feet she threw a fire spell at a Shadow that was leaping up at her and destroyed it instantly. I managed to get the last Shadow from behind as it came up from the shadows before turning to the last Soldier. With a cry, the girl ran up to it and hit it with her oar several times before Scrooge joined her in the attack. Their combined moves did the trick as the Heartless was destroyed and the crystal heart it held was freed. My cousin threw one last Plasma Bolt at the final Terror Torch and destroyed it leaving the beach Heartless free.
