Movie Review of the Snow Queen, 2002

The 2002 film production of the Snow Queen, starring Bridget Fonda (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Queen_(2002_film)), has to be my all-time favourite version of this classic tale. Technically, this film is more of a mini-series – broken into two parts, and running for a total of 180 minutes.

I love the way in which this adaptation shows the changes, as our heroine adventures through the different seasons, and how they give the full backstory of exactly how the Snow Queen came to be the way that she is. I also love the scenery and setting that they use for this film, as well as the fun and engaging characters they introduce throughout.

Ok, so the acting is a little bit cheesy at times, but overall this is a great film to watch, especially around the Christmas holidays, and the actors/actresses that they have chosen are perfect in their roles.

As a child, I used to really fear the Snow Queen, thanks to the 1995 British animated film adaptation, which depicts a frightening tale, complete with a convincingly scary portrayal of the villain of this piece (at least it did for me and my sister as children).

What I love about this film though, is that they actually humanise the Snow Queen a bit, and make you feel quite sorry for her. I love it when script writers decide to put a different spin on things, and when they make heroes and villains a little less ‘black and white,’ humanising them to shades of grey in between these polar opposites.

If you have not seen this movie adaptation of the Snow Queen, then I would highly recommend it. It has become a favourite of ours, and is one of our traditional Christmas movies that we look forward to watching each year.
