What Children Know

What Children Know

~ by Donna L. Ferguson Dudley

The children know the secret Little People of the Wood,
those folk who set imaginations flying!
They love the acorn caps that Brownies find for chapeaus, good,
and sigh to think of Fae’s bright frocks that flowers are providing!
The leaves that fly in Autumn, surely ferry riders too!
Many the child who’s spied them, whizzing over!
And children search among the grass as we, too, used to do,
in hopes of that elusive four-leafed clover!
Such children know that ladybugs sport dots, by Fae bestowed,
And butterflies, too, show wee artists’ skills!
Those children seek the circling mushrooms where Fae music flows,
and Fairies foot it in their dainty reels!
A frog might be a Prince disguised, (truth, children will attest)!
And inchworms must be tailors as they measure, inch by inch!
With joy, such children drift to dreams of magic Fairy fests!
For true believers find the path; (for them, it is a cinch)!
Some of us keep that magic and refuse to turn our backs
on wondrous moments that belief provided!
Though some might chide us, telling us, “It’s good sense that we lack,”
we cherish all the wonderment, no matter how derided.
