Nocturne for the King of Saxony, 19 March 1990

Nocturne for the King of Saxony, 19 March 1990

~ by Charles A. Coulombe

Majesty! Welcome to your halls,
Site in former times of balls,
Feasts in honor of the Crown
Your fathers wore in Dresden town.
After years of dirt and slag,
Again, watchtower flies your flag.

In these unroyal United States
We cannot understand these fates
Whose fierce uncanny voices sing
Return of Emperor and of King,
No matter! You may flow on tide
Returning Europe’s regal pride
So that every land and place
May welcome back its regal race.

Our duty, which we may not shirk
Is not to take this time to smirk
At thrones we may not sit upon –
Lest Arthur rise in Avalon.
Majesty! Enjoy this day,
While we pursue our darkened way
