No Straight Lines in Nature

No Straight Lines in Nature

That commonplace of art instruction is true:

From the rainbow to the tomato worm

And in the rhythms of our chambered hearts

Creation curves itself around our lives

A straight line is of the imagination

Repudiated even by that famous crow

Who flies as he will and not according

To the abstracts of mathematicians

Nothing in nature chooses graphed confines –

Of course the man-made coffin – that features straight lines
