Those Eyes

Those Eyes

With such calm certainty

Those eyes looked back at me

And I was lost

I knew before I said

That I as sure as had

Foresworn the cost

A clear pearl on a string

And at that beckoning

And in that place

A butterfly’s soft breath

Or fox-step light as death

Were on a face

So I could not say no

And e’en would gladly go

Into the rise

Against all better thought

For I could ever not

Gainsay those eyes
