Summary: A brief biography of DC Comics’ Orion

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Superhero Sundays! I’m Ian Wilson, Fellowship and Fairydust’s resident comic expert. This week’s hero is DC Comics’ Orion.

Orion is the son of Darkseid, the evil overlord of Apokolips. In an unusual peace deal with High Father, leader of New Genesis, Orion was traded for High Father’s son Scott Free (more on him later) and raised on New Genesis. While in his boyhood, Orion dedicated himself to the fight  against his birth father’s tyrannical regime.

As the son of Darkseid, Orion is gifted with superhuman strength, and he is nearly invulnerable. He is known for his raging temper, which sometimes gets out of control in the heat of battle. He is usually accompanied by Lightray, his fast talking best friend, and Mother Box, a device of incredible power (it’s a little bit like Dr. Who’s TARDIS).

Orion was created by legendary comic artist and writer, Jack Kirby, and first appeared in New Gods #1 back in 1971.
